Event Recap: Gustavo Oviedo's "ISLANDIA" Book Release
by Joel Linkewer on January 16, 2019
This past weekend, Multi-disciplinary artist Gustavo Oviedo unveiled "ISLANDIA," a self-published edition cataloging ten years worth of nautical expeditions, murals, and studio practices. Curated into 100 full-color spread pages, the publication is equally documentary and autobiographical as Oviedo releases a glimpse both into his artistic practice and the constant evolution of South Florida's aquatic environments. From underwater video stills to images of completed multi-media works, the entirety of Oviedo's process is showcased, seemingly framing each step as its own piece of a broader documentary archive.
The release took place at Wynwood's Rácket, which was transformed into a gallery for the occasion, featuring site-specific murals and some of Oviedo newest multi-media works, alongside the artist's notable nautical videos. Altogether the exhibit provided a well-curated collection of the artist's practice to celebrate and complement the launch of the publication. A limited edition of "ISLANDIA" is now available for purchase. Contact gustavo-oviedo.com for more details.
